Akatisto in Lingua latina
This Latin version has been dated to about the year 825 by Dom Michel Huglo. The Latin version has small textual variations in common with a family of Greek manuscript versions which originate in South Italy – the Latin must therefore belong to the same family. One may thus suppose that this translation was not done in Constantinople, but in Italy. This supposition is strengthened by the fact that at the end of the short strophes, the traditional “Alleluia” has been replaced with “Ave sponsa insponsata”. Could this reason be the suppression of the “Alleluia” during Lent in the West? In the version above, I have restored the alleluias to their customary places – the original has “Ave sponsa insponsata”.
